On Monday, October 17th, Block 8 Academy checked out the Compassion Experience in Burnaby. The Compassion Experience is a traveling exhibition that profiles the lives of children living in extreme poverty.

The Compassion Experience is an immersive exhibit that allowed the children to experience other cultures. As they walked through the exhibit they learned of Yannely and Jonathan who are both from the Dominican Republic. They saw and heard how extreme poverty, sickness and poor education could stifle their dreams.

The children of Block 8 then learned how those children used their strength and creativity to change their lives and the lives of their communities for the better. It was an eye opening and inspiring experience!

The students got a short botany lesson, and took some time to photograph plants.

Devil's Club, also known as Devil's Walking Stick takes many years before they produce seeds.  It is very sensitive to the impact of humans.  Seen by first nations groups as a link to the spirit world, charcoal from the stalk is still used to make ceremonial as well as protective masks.  The berries are POISONOUS to humans, but bears like them!

First Nations groups have used this plant as medicine for adult onset diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.  38 groups of people use it for 34 different types of illnesses!

Amongst other things, it has been used to treat:  lice, pain, measles, cough, fever, sores and burns (inner bark burned then crushed and mixed with salmonberries or … dog poo!! … and put on like cream.)  It is a proven anti bacterial, antifungal and antiviral agent!  It was also used to bring good luck, as well as to purify people and houses.

Internal use of devil's club can dangerously lower blood sugar, so check with your doctor before using it.
